Oral Communication
Speakers are able to verbally express themselves through a logical organization of their ideas and information to inform others on a particular topic. An effective speaker demonstrates command of the content through skillful delivery in various contexts that use multiple strategies of narration, exposition, persuasion, rhetoric and/or description.
The Green Vs. Green project develops learners' oral communication skills. Learners must present to members of the public, either at an environmentally-themed event or at a location where consumers buy energy-using products. In the project, learners research the chemistry of air pollution, how energy use creates air pollution, and the mathematics of choosing between an energy-saving product and a cheaper, less energy-efficient product. Learners then publish a buyer's guide explaining the many factors that contribute to an informed decision about energy-saving products. Based on the buyer's guide, the learners must assist consumers in understanding the choices they face during brief presentations Because the content of the presentation varies depending on the audience, learners must develop a general strategy to communicate, regardless of the specific content. Learners must make an oral presentation with few controlled variables, which makes for a very challenging, but very rewarding experience.
