Written Proficiency
Students read to write, and write to be read. They are able to express themselves clearly to various audiences in multiple genres and subject areas through their ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. They are also able to evaluate their own writing in order to revise effectively, taking charge of their own writing process.
Learners develop their written proficiency in the Stained Graph Window project. In the project, learners create an art piece for the school Art Show by "drawing" the lines with the graphs of equations. They also create an artist's statement - a page-long essay that discusses in detail the inspiration for the artwork, the design process, the mathematical detail, and the artist's experience in creating the work. This artist's statement is a challenging, personal, technical piece that forces learners to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the project, the process, and their own learning.
